Hepatic effects of fenzlozic acid.

Fenclozic acid (I.C.I. 54,450: Myalex) has recently been withdrawn from trial because of hepatotoxicity. In a published trial (Chalmers, Kellgren, and Platt, 1969), which suggests that it has some effect as an anti-inflammatory agent in rheumatoid arthritis, up to 400 mg. fenclozic acid were given daily for 10 days to 40 patients and compared with 3 6 g. aspirin daily. Two of these patients showed abnormal serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) values after treatment with fenclozic acid. As more patients had raised SGOT values after treatment with aspirin it was concluded that further evaluation of fenclozic acid was justified.
